Pink Revisited . . . 20 Years of Cause Marketing

I have often shared my issues with the pink ribbon and cause marketing here on this blog. I am a big supporter of Breast Cancer Action's (BCA) Think Before You Pink campaign because they challenge companies that may use pink to increase their sales especially those who produce products with ingredients linked to breast cancer. During the month of October everywhere you look there are pink ribbon's slapped on all kinds of products.

BCA puts out a quarterly newsletter the Source and I wrote an article for the fall issue which came out this week. In the piece I share my feelings about the use of the pink ribbon and cause marketing. I encourage you to read it and share it if it speaks to you.

Check it out here! And let me know what you think!

I completely agree, Cathy, and wrote about it on my blog as well. I feel like the pink campaign is actually lulling us into the comfortable sleep of believing that we are doing something when we buy that Sharpie or tub of yogurt. There should be transparency regarding what percentage of profits are being donated and to whom. But mostly, I am sick of the colour pink. It reminds me that before I was diagnosed I thought a pink ribbon meant something important. Now I have learned that it often doesn't.

Love your blog.

It annoys me as well. I said recently at the supermarket, "You know, if they want to donate money to the cause, then just donate it!!, but stop 'MAKING' people/TRICKING people into buying your product because you are holding money for the cause HOSTAGE."

Found your blog from the Woman's Day article. I like your opinion on "pink stuff". I love to wear pink and like to have breast cancer awareness pins and such - but I caution people about purchasing everthing that has a ribbon on it. Make a donation that is 100% supportive. IF I am making a specific purchase and there is an opporunity that a portion will be a donation - then I buy the pink ribbon item - only then. I am sporting a new pink ribbon phone cover - just to bring awareness and it only cost $3.99. Just my two cents. Looking forward to following along your journey.
